In Collaboration with Opera Queensland’s Bel Canto Festival, One Equal Music traces the roots of bel canto opera back to the madrigal. Known for its romantic poetry, intricate musical textures, and emotive vocal lines, the madrigal forms the basis of the bel canto operatic style. Five solo voices from One Equal Music, accompanied by continuo section will bring to life the expressive works of leading Madrigal composers of the time. These early songs explore themes of love, heartbreak, and the complexity of the human condition – the emotional terrain that laid the foundations for opera as an artform.

After its successful first outing in 2023, we return to St Brigid’s to perform Rachmaninov’s monumental All-Night Vigil. Premiered in 1915, this masterpiece was born in the shadow of World War I and hailed as one of the greatest choral works ever written. Composed in just two weeks during some of Russia’s darkest days, this music offered solace to a nation in turmoil, transcending its sacred roots to become a universal expression of resilience and hope. Rachmaninov poured his soul into this work, blending ancient Russian chant traditions with his lush Romantic style to create something profoundly human and deeply spiritual. Featuring the soaring clarity of unaccompanied voices and the earth-shattering depths of the basso profundo, this is music that stirs the heart and lingers in the soul. Experience the All-Night Vigil live with One Equal Music and discover why Rachmaninov considered it one of his finest achievements.

This otherworldly collaboration sees strings and choir unite with one of Australia’s newest choralensembles, based right here in Brisbane! One Equal Music joins Camerata for this ethereal, spine- tingling concert of music that is both thrilling and achingly beautiful. Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s ethereal The Spheres sets a tone of emotive energy. The majestic orchestral suite by Classical music’s greatest hero, Bach, and later in the program Vivaldi’s iconic Gloria drive home the passion of the evening. What better way to make music than a plea for peace as you’ll hear in Peteris Vask’s Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace), and a particularly striking moment will surely be in Erik Esenvalds’ Stars, that puts voices together with glass harmonics. This beautiful concert will be very special and a wonderful way to round out Camerata’s 2025 season!
As always, join Camerata and One Equal Music in the foyer after the concert to meet the musicians and have a chat.
